Allison

I wake up feeling like my back is against a fireplace, warm, comfortable, and exactly where I want to be.

The fire behind me snores and I jerk fully away. Suddenly, everything that’s happened and who’s here comes flooding back.

The girl at work who looked like Nora, the man attacking me, Jax killing that guy. Jax taking care of me through my panic attack. Jax, who’s currently spooning me. He’s still here.

His arms completely hold me to him. One covering my chest from underneath, and one hugging my stomach. I lean into his hold until the pressure on my bladder becomes too much.

I move carefully so I don’t wake him, but even in his sleep, he’s strong. I pry his arms off me and run to the bathroom. I’m freezing without him.

The pile of wet clothes and shoes is gone. He cleaned? While I brush my teeth, I avoid looking at my reflection for as long as possible. After a deep breath, I level my gaze in the mirror.

My hair is still in the braid that he gave me, with a few wild strands flying about. The dark circles under my eyes are a bit less pronounced this morning. And there on my cheek is the only sound from the attack I have…a scrape and a bruise from my face smacking against the wall.

I brush my finger over it for a moment before I dab some antiseptic on it. I thought I would feel…broken today. I can’t believe I can even look myself in the eyes.

As I head back to my room and lean in my doorway, I wonder what to do with the half-naked man in my bed who’s sprawled out on his back.

I take a second to appreciate his face. He smiles and laughs often, but he has a hardness about him. His features are much softer now. It makes him look younger. I notice the scar on his jawline again and the tattoos on his chest. When did he take off his shirt? Oh well, I don’t hate the view.

His ink is all sporadic and dark. He has some Celtic knots tied in with them all, a long paragraph on his ribs, and a skull with flowers growing out of it on his shoulder. I tilt my head so I can see the octopus dragging down a ship on his bicep. I like that one.

His muscles and features are so much smoother that it makes me realize how tense he is when he’s awake. He snores softly and my eyes drag back up to his relaxed face.

Even though the sun is coming up, I decide that I’m not ready to start the day yet. I carefully crawl back into bed and move closer to him. I lay my head on his shoulder and rest my hand on his warm chest.

His arm automatically grabs my back, and he turns towards me. His other arm drapes across me, holding me down. He snores again as he shifts. Even in his sleep, he keeps me close.
